Cannabis is taking root in Oklahoma

We're fast approaching the one year anniversary of the passage of State Question 788, legalizing cannabis as a medicine. We became the 31st state in the nation to approve legal medical marijuana. According to the Oklahoma Medical Marijauan Authority, as of May 13, 115,002 patient, 1,554 caregiver, 1,468 dispensary, 2,890 grower and 802 processor licenses have been approved. That's 120,248 approved licenses!

In addition to medical cannabis, industrial hemp is about to take root. The Oklahoma Legislature legalized hemp farming in April 2018, and requires farmers to establish a relationship with a university in Oklahoma that has a plant science curriculum such as Redland Community College and Langston University. The 2018 Farm Bill was signed into law by President Trump, and hemp has now been removed from the Controlled Substances Act. Once the United States Department of Agriculture has created new hemp farming regulations, the crop will return to farms after an 82-year hiatus.

The February 1938 edition of Popular Mechanics Magazine ran this article, New Billion Dollar Crop. The article predicted that with the invention of the decorticator machine, hemp was about to become a billion dollar crop with more than 50,000 commercial uses. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 successfully removed hemp from American farms based on reefer madness lies.
All of the stigma associated with cannabis is now coming to an end. More and more people are discovering that cannabis is the medicine of choice for many illnesses and diseases. Patients are stopping their pharmaceutical medications now that cannabis is legal and available. In fact, in states where medical or adult use is legal, opioid prescriptions have plummeted, and many patients are getting off dangerous, addictive pills.
