New Billion Dollar Crop

Educate Yourself!

The above article appeared in Popular Mechanics magazine February, 1938. The article predicted that hemp farming and manufacturing were about to explode because of the invention of the decorticator machine. The article said hemp was about to become a billion dollar crop. This was the first time the word "billion" had been applied to an agricultural commodity in American journalism.

Because of the Marijuana Taxc Act of 1937, hemp farming in the U. S. came to an abrupt halt, and the crop never got to reach its potential.

Hemp is making a comeback now that the 2018 Farm Bill has been signed into law. Hemp has now been removed from the Controlled Substances Act, and can now reach its potential as an agricultural commodity.
